What to do when someone dies abroad
When someone dies abroad or away from their area it can be a challenging situation.
However, we are experienced in dealing with repatriations and can help.
It is important to know what their travel insurance covers as this can affect costs.
What happens if someone dies outside of North Yorkshire?
We will liaise with the authorities and arrange the paperwork. If it happened in the UK we will collect their body and bring it back to North Yorkshire for the funeral.
Can you arrange a funeral elsewhere in the UK?
Yes, but usually we would advise contacting a local funeral director in that location. This would also be the cheaper option. If the deceased has one of our pre-paid funeral plans, this can be used across the UK.
We have links with fellow independent funeral directors across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Please just contact us.
For immediate help or advice please call us on 01723 859 279 at any time. When you call us, you’ll speak to one of our experienced team. We’re here to help you through every stage of the process. If you have any questions, please just ask.

How do i register a death?
The process involves securing a Death Certificate from the doctor, making an appointment with the registrar within five days, and performing the registration preferably at the local register office where the death occurred for immediate documentation.
UNEXPECTED DEATHS
We offer personalised burial services, helping families select a final resting place for their loved ones. Whether you prefer a traditional grave site or a more contemporary memorial park, we are here to guide you every step of the way.
What happens after this?
Once the Coroner is satisfied with investigations, they release the body to your funeral director. They’ll also send paperwork to the Register Office so the family can start registering the death.
Here at F. A. Stockill and Son we can help you with this and keep you informed every step of the way.
What happens if the deceased wants to be laid to rest outside of North Yorkshire?
We can arrange this with you.
Outside of the UK, we work with specialist repatriation organisations. Usually this is done by air. If you would prefer road transport to European countries, we can also arrange this. There are more details on our types of funeral – repatriation page.

Plan ahead with golden charter pre-paid funeral plans
A funeral plan is an easy way to arrange the funeral you want in advance. A plan allows you to specify your wishes and pay for the funeral director’s services included in your plan. As customers often tell us, that can bring peace of mind to you and your family. A plan from Golden Charter also includes an allowance towards third party costs. These are essential, non-funeral director services such as the cremation or burial fees, plus the minister or officiant’s fee to perform the service.
At F. A. Stockill & Son we work in partnership with Golden Charter to provide you with a simple way to plan ahead. As one of the UK’s largest funeral plan providers1, Golden Charter has helped over 900,000 people to plan ahead2, so we’re completely confident in offering their plans to you.
Everyone has different needs when it comes to funeral planning, so we make sure the plans we offer are as flexible as possible. When you get in touch, we’ll be happy to discuss your funeral requirements and tailor a plan to suit you.
