What to do when someone dies in a hospital or hospice
Sadly, when someone dies in a hospital or hospice it is often expected.
The doctors issue a Medical Cause of Death Certificate. They may hand this directly to the next of kin or pass it to the establishment’s bereavement officer. The next of kin can use this certificate to register the death.
Once this certificate has been issued and we have the “Green” form we can come and take the deceased into our care.
It is important at this stage to inform us or the hospital if a cremation will take place. If this is the case, we will require additional paperwork from the doctor (Part I and Part II).
Collecting personal belongings
It can be very emotional time collecting your relative or friend’s personal belongings from a hospital or in a hospice. The staff will be sympathetic.
If you know the deceased may have had valuables in the ward safe, please check these have been included. If you would like items to remain with your loved one, for example jewellery, do let the staff know.
You have our sincerest sympathies. Whether someone’s passing is expected or sudden, it is a shock for everyone involved.

How do i register a death?
The process involves securing a Death Certificate from the doctor, making an appointment with the registrar within five days, and performing the registration preferably at the local register office where the death occurred for immediate documentation.
UNEXPECTED DEATHS
We offer personalised burial services, helping families select a final resting place for their loved ones. Whether you prefer a traditional grave site or a more contemporary memorial park, we are here to guide you every step of the way.

Once the Coroner is satisfied with investigations, they release the body to your funeral director. They’ll also send paperwork to the Register Office so the family can start registering the death.
Here at F. A. Stockill and Son we can help you with this and keep you informed every step of the way.
Do I have to use the nominated funeral director who was first called to remove the deceased?
No, you are free to make your own arrangements and use whichever funeral director you wish.

Plan ahead with golden charter pre-paid funeral plans
A funeral plan is an easy way to arrange the funeral you want in advance. A plan allows you to specify your wishes and pay for the funeral director’s services included in your plan. As customers often tell us, that can bring peace of mind to you and your family. A plan from Golden Charter also includes an allowance towards third party costs. These are essential, non-funeral director services such as the cremation or burial fees, plus the minister or officiant’s fee to perform the service.
At F. A. Stockill & Son we work in partnership with Golden Charter to provide you with a simple way to plan ahead. As one of the UK’s largest funeral plan providers1, Golden Charter has helped over 900,000 people to plan ahead2, so we’re completely confident in offering their plans to you.
